Programme Synopsis
In this character-driven medical drama told from the nurses' point of view, Christina Hawthorne is the forceful-yet-caring, Chief Nursing Officer heading a group of nurses at Richmond Trinity Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. She is very passionate about her work and is always advocating of her patients and her staff, even when it threatens her job.
When a patient's care is at risk, she will not hesitate to violate hospital protocol, defend her staff against egotistical doctors or firmly stand up to apathetic administrators who seem to have forgotten a hospital's true purpose.
While embedding herself into the new work atmosphere, she must also deal with a new relationship that has formed between her and Tom. She deals with the fact that he wants a commitment now and she is still unsure if she can adjust to becoming close with someone else having been recently widowed. She also has to take on her equally important role as a mother to a willful, rebellious teenage daughter.

No Excuses
In the first episode of the season things get crazy for Christina Hawthorne after having to move to James River Hospital because of budget cuts at Richmond Trinity. Christina has to get along with new bosses this time round.
The Starting Line
Marcus wants to date Camille but isn't sure how it will go because she is the boss's daughter. Christina has trouble getting Valerie the lifesaving surgery she will need to live long enough to get into rehab to battle her heroin addiction. Christina having had enough red tape to battle through goes to the ethics committee only to get a surprise. A mother tells her son after his surgery a secret she didn't want him to know.
Road Narrows
Christina deals with a bad car accident that injures two employees and has to find out what caused the grandmother to drive erratically. Also, Candy returns from Afghanistan earlier than expected.
Afterglow
Christina has difficulty getting the only doctor at James River hospital to perform the surgery on a prisoner who killed a pastor. The doctor doesn't want do the surgery because of his religious beliefs.
The Match
Christina tries to prepare one mother for a total loss of her daughter at any time. Her daughter is in desperate need of a kidney transplant and has trouble finding matches because she is of mixed race. A little boy hoping for a meeting from his hero thanks to the make a wish foundation gets disappointed when a celebrity he is not familiar with decides to do a favor for his hero.
Final Curtain
A woman from the Afghanistan who may have suffered a serious fall while pregnant, may have trouble getting treatment because of the language barrier. Tom finally undergoes surgery for his elbow. Christina catches her daughter at her home with an employee from the hospital.
Hidden Truths
Christina's friend Donna comes into the ER to be checked out. They discover she has encephalitis that she contracted from the person who raped her because of that her insurance won't treat her because of the disease she contracted. At home tension has been building at home after finding her daughter having had sex with an employee of James river and. Christina doesn't feel comfortable with the relationship between Erin and Tom and tells Christina exactly how he feels. Kelly helps a patient out and with her feelings about being a gay teen and reveals that she is also gay just like the patient is.
A Mother Knows
Isabel goes to desperate measures to protect her son from negligent care after becoming concerned for his health. Christina and Detective Nick Renta attempt to find Isabelle. Tom has to go back into surgery for his injury. Bobby and Steve try to help the family, whose grandmother injured Tom, cope with the aftermath of the accident. Ray finally learns why Candy was sent home from Afghanistan earlier than expected.
Picture Perfect
Christina jumps to the wrong conclusion after seeing a bruise on her daughter's face thinking that Marcus caused the bruise. Also a grieving mother stops by the hospital to get her camera which contained the last images of her daughter. Christina and Erin disagree over what Tom should do in his career and Steve runs into a friend from his past.
No Exit
James River Hospital is about be inspected to see if it can stay open as a running hospital and not be forced to close down. Just as the inspection is about to get started a construction accident has everyone going into panic mode. While trying to save all the patients, the hospital has to save two of its colleagues. Bobbi and Steve finally tell each other some secrets about their past and Christina tells Tom a surprising secret of her own.
